Queen’s Royal College closes out its Penn Relays 2011 campaign with a creditable fourth place finish in Event 462 – High School Boys’ 4×100 Small Schools.

Fresh off their run in the High School Boys’ 4×400 this morning, Deon Lendore, Asa Guevara and Jonathan Farinha were joined by team mate Johnathan Holder and completed the sprint relay in 42.24s.  Their time was just 0.55 seconds shy of the winning time set by Jamaica’s Camperdown High School.  Junipero Serra Gardena High School of Gardena, California and Herbert Morrison Technical High School of Montego Bay in Jamaica finished second and third respectively.

QRC.edu again extends congratulations to the boys and the College on another year of fine performances at the Penn Relays.

We further extend thanks to the QRC North America, DC Chapter for this alumni group’s ongoing and material support of QRC’s participation in this annual athletic meeting.

Courtesy Old Boy and track enthusiast Hayden “Tom” Noel, we have video of the QRC 4x400m team’s exploits in the High School 4x400m at the 2010 Adidas Grand Prix in New York City recently.  The video captures the second, third and final legs of a race against some of the top schools in the world.

According to Tom:

QRC winning the 4x400m for High Schools at the Adidas Diamond League event in New York (June 2010). Excuse the shaky start (guy sitting next to me bumping my arm) and the shouting (my Uncle being overly exuberant…understandably so [as a QRC Old Boy himself]!) Great race overall and excellent last leg from Jehue Gordon.

The Express’ Garth Wattley writes a fantastic article on ancient rivalries, tradition, and that which binds us together as Royalians. [Link]

Sometimes, what happens on the field is not as significant as what happens off it. That can be true even when a title is at stake. So it was last Wednesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium at the North Zone final of Coca-Cola InterCol.

They may have had a sense of it, but I’m not at all sure that the jubilant Queen’s Royal College footballers-jumping in a tight huddle on the field after prevailing in kicks from the spot against St Mary’s College-realised just what they caused in both halves of the near-to-packed main stand.

In the blue-and-white CIC section, the pain and disappointment of losing to that team would have been keen and as annoying as being bitten behind the ear by a bloodthirsty mosquito.

In the royal blue section, though, the smiling just didn’t cease, the Scout band played on, and big men for whom school is now but a very distant experience, hugged and embraced each other.

It was quite a scene, this meeting of the tribes.
