‘A Blast from the Past’, featuring six of the country’s top inter-col teams, was yesterday launched at the Queen’s Park Oval.

The intercol reunion, which is being hosted by RAG Sport Marketing will feature St Mary’s, Fatima, Queen’s Royal College, Presentation San Fernando, St Benedict’s and Naparima College and will be staged on October 23 at the Oval.

It will see several of the country’s former top players donning their gear to raise funds for renal care patients in T&T and will be staged under the kind patronage of The John Hayes Memorial Kidney Foundation.

Among the invited guest at yesterday’s launching were event coordinator Andre Lawrence of RAG Sport Marketing, Dexter Skeene CEO of the T&T Pro League, former national player and Fatima old boy Alivin Corneal, Dr Emile Mohammed of West Shore Medical, Lisa Abraham of QPCC and former QRC old boy Tansley Thompson.

Each shared their experiences of close friends/family suffering with chronic kidney diseases and added their kind words and support for the event.

According to Lawrence each school will field teams in two age groups 35-49 and 50 and over during the whole day exercise that is guaranteed to bring back fond memories. In addition, an exhibition game consisting of two Girls Schools will also take place.

The boys play their final match of the first round today at St. Anthony’s College Ground.  Kick-off is at 3:45PM and it is a must-win game for us.

At present, we’re 4th on the seven-team table and eight points adrift of the Tigers.  However, a winning record from today’s game through to the end can still see us land the league title.

This would require a far better performance from our boys when we host Fatima and travel to CIC in the second round.  All that we need further is for only one other team – likely East Mucurapo – to do us the favour of helping St. Anthony’s drop points.

Should the stars and our team’s fortunes align, this would set up a title-deciding showdown versus St. Anthony’s College on our home ground on Saturday 22nd October.

It’s a long row to hoe, but demonstrated support can certainly help the guys along the way.  They’ve shown the potential in their pre-season run, producing five wins with 14 goals for and none against.  We’ve also seen flashes of what they can achieve, especially in our last game, a 4-0 drubbing of visiting Trinity College.

Standings going into today’s last first round games are as follows:

  Team Played Points
1 St. Anthony’s College 5 15
2 East Mucurapo Secondary 5 10
3 St. Mary’s Collegee 5 9
4 Queen’s Royal College 5 7
5 Fatima College 6 6
6 Trinity College (Moka) 5 6
7 Malick Secondary 5 0

Though still not showing the easy free-flowing football that characterised pre-season play, our boys still relied on their overall fitness and fundamentals to put down an eager Malick Secondary team.

QRC, noted by one commenter to be at least three goals better than Malick, held majority possession in the first half and failed to capitalise on opportunities that were presented for goal. It took until minute 12 of the second half for team captain and last stopper Jeroen Blugh to lead by example, netting a free kick for QRC’s first goal.

From there on, the game was played for the most part in Malick’s half of the field and the second goal appeared inevitable. It eventually came with some individual skill, Akil Morris side-stepping the Malick keeper and notching with five minutes left in regulation.

In the day’s other North zone games, East Mucurapo held on for a 1-0 win over St. Mary’s, and St. Anthony’s battled to a 2-1 win over Fatima College. Trinity had the rest day.

QRC enjoys the bye on next match day, Wednesday 14th. We then face St. Mary’s College at home in the first half of the SSFL Clásico on Saturday 17th September.

QRC opened the Secondary Schools Football League today with a one-all draw against East Mucurapo Secondary.

The boys in blue opened with a spectacular goal in the fifth minute off a free kick taken by Tariq Ransome. They then took their feet off the gas allowing East Mucurapo back into the game in the 25th.

Observers noted that the QRC team showed far better conditioning and cohesiveness than their opponents, but the Mucurapo players displayed more hustle and determination through the remainder of the first half and most of the second. A late push and display of the form evident in pre-season play proved insufficient to pull out the win.

In the day’s other match, St. Anthony’s trounced St. Mary’s by three goals to nil.

We next visit Malick Secondary on Saturday 10th September.

QRC.edu thanks Old Boy Ramesh Ramdeen for providing running commentary via email this afternoon.

Queen’s Royal College opens North Zone competition of the Secondary Schools’ Football League with a match against East Mucurapo Secondary School at the National Stadium on Wednesday 7th September, 2011.

The First Eleven training team has put on a strong showing throughout their pre-season training schedule.

The Boys registered their first pre-season victory against a men’s team from Augustana College, coached by Old Boy Brenton Joseph.  The Royalians notched all five of their goals in the first 25 minutes of a game that ended 5-1 over the visiting Vikings.

QRC next went on to play a hotly contested affair against East Zone League champions St. Augustine Secondary.  The Green Machine, featuring a team largely unchanged from last season and playing at home, fell one goal to nil to the boys in blue.

Continuing its East Zone tour, the QRC senior training team went on to trounce Trinity College East by a 4-0 margin away before closing the pre-season campaign with a 4-0 victory at home over East Zone Intercol Champs, Arima North Secondary.

Featuring a number of veteran players from last year’s campaign, the team is surely signalling intent to improve on last year’s third-place North league finish and will be seeking to at least reclaim the North Intercol title last held in 2009.

The senior team’s match calendar is as follows:

Round One

  • Wed 7th Sept vs East Mucurapo Secondary at Hasely Crawford Stadium
  • Sat 10th Sept vs Malick Secondary at Malick Grounds
  • Wed 14th Sept on Bye
  • Sat 17th Sept vs St. Mary’s College at home
  • Wed  21st Sept vs Fatima College at Fatima Grounds
  • Fri 23rd Sept vs Trinity College at home
  • Wed 28th Sept vs St. Anthony’s College at Westmoorings
Round Two

  • Sat 8th Oct on Bye
  • Wed 12th Oct vs St. Mary’s College at CIC Grounds
  • Sat 15th Oct vs Fatima College at home
  • Wed 19th Oct vs Trinity College at Moka

QRC alumnus Richard “Torpedo” Thompson put on a stellar performance at the National Track and Field Championships 2011 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium yesterday, August 13th, 2011.  In a top-class field that included fellow alumnus Mark Burns, Thompson took gold.  In the process, the Olympic silver medalist set a new National Record time and personal best of 9.85 seconds in the 100m sprint final for men.

Thompson’s Wikipedia article at this time states that the achievement has ranked him 9th fastest in all-time lists and eclipses Ato Boldon’s national record 9.86 seconds.

Video of the race is embedded below and can also be seen on Youtube via http://bit.ly/NAAA-100m-final-2011

We have been reliably informed that the 4×400 event in which QRC’s quartet of Asa Guevara, Jonathan Farinha, Edwin Phillips and Deon Lendore ran today was not in fact a final but the 28th of 33 heats. We did though place first in the heat, registering about the 16th fastest time of the day out of over 300 schools. It is still a creditable performance given the number of schools involved.

The top 8 fastest teams qualified for the final today at 5:25 PM EST. Five Jamaican teams have made their way into that final. Our observer believes if our boys had stiffer competition we would have run a faster time. But we were not in one of the top 4 seeded heats, placement being based on times registered this year.

As earlier reported, the team’s winning time in its heat was 3:19.99, and for the track enthusiasts, the splits were as follows:

  • Asa Guevara 50.72

  • Jonathan Farinha 49.76

  • Edwin Phillips 52.14

  • Deon Lendore 47.38

Thanks to Old Boy and track enthusiast Hayden “Tom” Noel for the catch.
