With the final round of matches played, St. Anthony’s securing a victory over Fatima and Woodbrook going down 3-0 to St. Mary’s, QRC go into the next phase of competition in third place. However, with the first four teams all having four victories under their belts and second through fourth all on 12 points, the race to the league championship is still wide open.

QRC’s match schedule for the second round of play is as follows:
- Sat 26th Sept — Home vs. Fatima
- Wed 30th Sept — Away vs. Mucurapo
- Sat 3rd Oct — Home vs. St. Mary’s
- Wed 7th Oct — Away vs. Woodbrook (Hasely Crawford Stadium Training Ground)
- Sat 10th Oct — Home vs. Trinity
- Tue 13th Oct — Away vs. St. Anthony’s
- Thu 16th Oct — BYE
The QRC team is master of its own destiny at this point as a perfect record through the round will see us secure the League title.
Solid defence will ensure that the team maintains clean sheets in all the games, including against high-scoring St. Anthony’s; QRC was the only team to hold St. Anthony’s goalless. The attack however must score to achieve the needed wins. We are the least productive of the top five teams with just eight goals in six matches, compared with CIC’s 17, St. Anthony’s 16 and Mucurapo’s 13. Mucurapo is fifth in the table.
The second round starts with the return match versus Fatima, a team to which QRC suffered a real hard-luck loss in the first round and against which the boys will surely be looking for a decisive win.

QRC goes into their bye in the last match day of the league’s first round. After a less than desirable start with hard-luck losses to two traditional nemeses on match day’s 1 and 3, QRC has gone unbeaten and sit at the top of the table on goal difference. Fatima sit behind but with a game in hand.

On the afternoon of September 23rd, match day 7, Fatima face St. Anthony’s at home, Woodbrook tackle St. Mary’s at the St. James Barracks, and East Mucurapo take a trip to Moka to meet Trinity College.
The most favourable results for QRC on match day 7 would be to see Fatima go down to St. Anthony’s and St. Mary’s draw with or lose to Woodbrook. This would re-establish the three-way tie at the top of the table on points, but St. Anthony’s go top on goal difference, QRC second and Fatima third. These though are the least likely results.
Odds are that Fatima will battle to a hard-fought win over St. Anthony’s taking them to fifteen. St. Mary’s will clobber table-proppers Woodbrook and move on to thirteen points.
Even if Fatima and St. Anthony’s were to play to a draw, QRC’s twelve points would still ensure a hold on the third spot in the table. The team then goes into their first second round match at home to Fatima on Saturday 26th September.

From the Trinidad Guardian of September 7th, 2009, story by Carl Jacobs:
Jayson Paul, 16-year-old Queen’s Royal College student, is among the eleven players who will vie for the 2009 national chess championship title in October.
Paul, last year’s Under-16 national champion, joined the group of finalists by placing second in the last of four qualifying contests which was won by Marcus Joseph. Paul and veteran Frank Sears entered the seventh and last round on four points each. The QRC student drew his game with Dr Eddison Chang to finish on four and a half, while Sears lost to Colin Knight. The first four rounds of the qualifier were played in Tobago but, since no Tobagonians had entered the race, the last three were held in Trinidad.
Seven players contested this qualifier: Marcus Joseph who finished with a perfect score, Paul, Chang, Sears, Knight, Hayden Lee and Dev Soondarsingh. Paul is another of the country’s prominent juniors, a product of the T&T Chess Foundation where he started training four years ago. His qualifying for the national championship finals is his best performance so far, although he has scored consistently well in a number of tournaments. Last July, the QRC boy, together with a group of T&T students, spent ten days in China, attending the Global Young Leaders Conference. Paul belongs to a well-known chess playing family, the son of arbiter Ralston Paul. His younger siblings, Jarryon, Jonathan and Kirsten are also active tournament players.
Paul joins Keron Cabralis in representing the juniors at the finals which will be played in October. Cabralis, form three St Mary’s student, has an impressive record of achievement behind him, including his second place in last year’s championship finals. They will face an elite group of senior players led by champion Ravishen Singh who sent a clear signal of his intentons last Saturday by winning the Arima Fest rapid play tournament.
The other finalists are FM Christo Cave, QRC alumnus FM Mario Merritt, FM Frank Yee, FM Michael Pouchet, Marcus Joseph, Kishore Ramadhar and Leonard Duncan. With such a strong field, the chess community can expect another exciting climax to the national championship race.

Based on their results in the recently concluded CAPE Examinations, six QRC students earned additional scholarships in their subject areas.
Montel Garnes earned himself his award in the Business category, Dylan Martin and Yoachim Haynes distinguished themselves in Mathematics, Matthew Wyatt attained his scholarship in General Studies, Brandon Sawh’s performance won him an award in Science, and former Head Boy and class valedictorian Randall Stanley brought one home for the Blue-and-Blue in Modern Studies/Humanities.
We toast the young men on their individual achievements and extend congratulations to all successful CAPE candidates at the College in their own results.
Kudoes are extended too to Principal Lennard Hinkson and his staff for their tireless work with the young men at the College.
