QRC

vs
St. Anthony’s

By SchoolSoccerNet.com reporting:
A convincing performance by North Zone leaders, St. Anthony’s saw them pick up all three points against last placed, QRC, on Wednesday at St. Anthony’s Grounds. St. Anthony’s emerged 3-1 winners to maintain a 3 point lead ahead of Malick, at the top of the standings. Uriah Bentick, Micah Lewis and Reshad Wint were on target for the home team, while Jerome Mendez struck for the visitors. QRC have now gone 7 straight games without a victory, picking up only 1 point during those matches.

According to Trinidad Express coverage, St. Anthony’s scored in the 30th, 70th and 80th minutes, while QRC picked up the consolation item just before added-on time.

In other results, Malick continues their championship chase with a two-nil win away to Diego Martin. By reports, Mucurapo’s myriad wasted opportunities allowed neighbours Fatima escape with a one-nil victory.

The results cause no position changes in the seven-team table, with only the top three teams seeing adjustments in their points.

Relegation for the first time in the school’s decades long Championship Division history is now a real threat. Much now depends on the team’s performance in its last four games versus Malick, Diego Martin, Mucurapo and Fatima. The Royalians need to, at least, exceed Trinity’s additional point earnings by 3 in the final stretch. This is a plausible feat given that the Moka-based college has to face St. Anthony’s, rapid-firing Mucurapo, Fatima and Malick in their final four games, and the Trinity boys are unlikely to take their tally beyond the current five points.

QRC could do better if they were also to snatch victory from an under-performing Mucurapo. Compre however faces Trinity before and Diego Martin after their QRC match. If fourth-placed Diego Martin in their away fixture were to repeat their performance against Mucurapo, it would serve the Royalians well.

Many are looking on with great concern and hoping for the best in the last two weeks of league play, ending October 20th.

There was an error in the report on matches of September 29th, where it was stated that Diego and Compre had played to a nil-nil draw. The Diego Martin-Mucurapo Senior match carded for that date did not come off because there were not sufficient officials to call the game. That encounter was played today at Diego Martin, resulting in a 3-2 win for the home team.

The Malick-Fatima encounter, rained out on Wednesday 3rd October, was also played today ending in Malick’s first loss for the season. Fatima’s Sheldon Bateau notched the game’s single item in the 75th minute at Fatima Ground.

The day’s results have no impact on QRC’s cellar position. They do though cause some shuffling among the other teams, and put a minor damper on Malick’s title hopes. With St. Anthony’s unlikely to drop points on their way to the end of league play, Malick must remain unbeaten and trounce the Tigers when they meet on October 16th.

To avoid relegation though, the Royalians on 4 need to start picking up points and hope that Trinity on 5 and Mucurapo on 6 slow their own climbs. Facing St. Anthony’s and Malick in next games will make that exceeding difficult. But with matches away to Diego Martin, and at home to Mucurapo and then Fatima, the Boys in Blue can make a good attempt to end the league strong.

Saturday was QRC’s turn for the bye in the seven-team North Zone league. On the rest day though, the other three teams were able to play to results despite another day of inclement weather.

After taking a 3-1 first half lead, St. Anthony’s had to fight off Fatima College to pull out a 4-3 win and maintain their unbeaten record.

Malick is still with a game in hand following Wednesday’s called-off match at Fatima. They managed to take a 4-2 victory over Mucurapo to stay close on the Tigers’ heels.

Trinity and Diego Sec shared the points, playing to a 2-all draw at Diego Martin.

The race for pole position remains tight, Malick (19) remaining 3-points behind St. Anthony’s (22) but with the game in hand. Fatima (10) is now nine points behind Malick and remains third. Mucurapo holds fourth and Diego Martin fifth in the table with seven and six points respectively. On the draw to Diego Sec, Trinity leapfrogs QRC to take the sixth spot on the table with five points from their eight games.

QRC, on four points from seven games, will be hard pressed to claw their way off the bottom of the table. In next matches, the boys are away to St. Anthony’s on Wednesday 10th and at home to face Malick on Friday 12th.

QRC

vs
Trinity

Because of the weather and resultant traffic, we could not get to Hayes Street on the afternoon. However, SchoolSoccerNet.com continues to do a handy job of match coverage. From their article:
Trinity easily dismissed QRC by 1-4 on Wednesday at the QRC Grounds. This season ranks among one of the worst ever seasons witnessed by the College and they need to turn things around quickly if they are to safely avoid relegation. Jerron John was on target for the home team, with Kendell Sealy scoring 2 for the visitors and Kevon Duram and Richard Ayers also on target for Trinity…

In other matches, St. Anthony’s run of form continued with a 3-0 drubbing of Mucurapo Senior. The Malick-Fatima encounter did not come off because of the inclement weather. Diego Martin enjoyed the bye on the match day.

The results see St. Anthony’s take sole possession of the top of the table, but Malick is not far behind with a game in hand. All other positions remain unchanged. However, on the loss to table-propper Trinity, QRC hold onto sixth place by goal difference.

The Royalians enjoy the match-day bye on Saturday 6th. They are next away to St. Anthony’s on Wednesday 10th October.
