St Mary’s College edged Queen’s Royal College 25-23 to lift the Digicel Secondary Schools Rugby Football League final title recently.
QRC appeared to be in an unassailable lead going into the dying minutes of the final. At that point, the score was 23-11 in their favor. It however all went terribly wrong for them in the final three minutes when Zane Campbell attempted a drop goal from the opposition 22 metre line. The attempt was wide left but he cleverly chased the wide kick. This put the QRC defence under immense pressure. And not wanting to give away a try, they illegally obstructed Campbell’s path to the ball. The referee had little option but to award a penalty try, which was converted.

It took penalties to divide the North Zone’s two underachievers in our Intercol quarter final on Wednesday evening at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
QRC sought to take early control of the game, taking the attack to the opposition from the touch. On a counter-attack in the 5th minute, Mucurapo earned a free kick and didn’t realise that they had scored until everybody looking around for the ball noted that it had come to be tucked in the back of the net.
On the half hour mark, Compre found themselves two up following some good work down QRC’s left, Mutar Taylor catching the defence napping to shoot untroubled.
QRC came out after the half time interval looking far more purposeful. Loose balls were contested with greater conviction, passing options for the Compre boys were closed more quickly, and the entire team played more defensively when it became necessary.
