Archive for 2006

It has been an eventful year for our College.

Even as we struggled on the football field, we excelled in education with eight National Scholarships and saw a representative hockey team perform creditably at tournament in Tobago. The year also saw 18 new inductees to the Hall of Honour, including long-time Opposition Leader to Royalian and Prime Minister Eric Williams, Simbhoonath Capildeo, Justice Evan Rees, pannist extraordinaire Ray Holman, dramatist Errol Jones, Emeritus Professor Keith Laurence, and legal luminary and Queen’s Counsel Hugh Wooding. Pen profiles of all awardees are captured in a new QRC OBA publication, “Queen’s Royal College Hall of Honour Inductees 2006“, available at major book stores locally.

Principal, students and alumni all continued to work tirelessly throughout the year toward the advancement of our Alma Mater. And in 2007, we saw the continued growth of a new event on the Royalian calendar, the year-end QRC Small Lime, with attending alumni spanning 15 year levels.

We have also finally seen contracts awarded for long overdue restoration work on our hallowed and beloved halls. And as we look forward to 2007, we take one look back at some of what we leave behind.

The photos above are a few of the very last images of the degradation of the College Hall. As depressing as they are, may they represent our very lowest and stand as a reminder of a place to which we shall never return. From here, let there be only forward movement and momentum as we go into a new year.

To Royalians, Bluebloods, Lionhearts, all:
May our pace never slack and our muscles never tire.
May all our battles together be won.
May all our efforts bear fruit ’til overflowing.
May our brotherhood continue to grow from strength to strength.

I wish you all and your loved ones
a blest and prosperous 2007 and beyond.

A short first report on the “Reunion” held on Saturday 30th 2006… by the QPrin…

A great turn-out for first effort… when I left due to other commitments as darkness took over the field and players headed for the showers (whom am I fooling? The taps at the side of the covered walk-way leading to the West Block!), there were over a hundred Old Boys and sundry female supporters (brought by the ‘young’ generation) milling around on the basket-ball court (we didn’t include that this year) and environs.

The result of the much-awaited football ‘clash of generations’ (under-30′s vs over-30′s) – I shall leave the precise details to our chronicler, Keith Francis who was there with his camera and note-book and will no doubt give a full and detailed account on http://qrclink.blogspot.com/

Soon, but to my distress (I have closer friends among the over-30′s – mainly mid..) as my ‘subject line’ suggests they ‘elders’ fell for the ruse of the young… who arrived late allowing the early-arriving ‘seniors’ (it’s all relative!) [ young people come late to every social occasion- teenagers go to fete leaving home just before mid-night!!!] to warm-up and lubricate with appropriate beverages. The youngsters also played dirty calling in as ‘strikers’ the stars for “Canisius College” – the Aberdeen brothers.. Simba and Nkosi… go to the link http://www.socawarriors.net/football/info/college_players.php and click on the appropriate links and you will find out why it was advantage… also technically Nkosi isn’t an “Old Boy” but we really not going down that road.

The ‘seniors’ warmed up with Jean Lillywhite but when the ‘match’ (maybe ‘mis-match’) began around five p.m. he did not line up (even as a guest player)..at the risk of geting killed for omissions (and there were definitely some other ‘guests’ for the ‘seniors’ whom I did not recognize notably a very speedy and skillful left wing), I wish to point out to people who need to know that Cyril played a gallant mid-field position, Baird threw away a gift, Ramesh as well (Ramesh took a desperate ‘cobeau sweat’ at the end to try to salvage the position) and one of the stars on the ‘senior’ team was the now “Reverend” Lemuel Nelson who worked hard in the vineyard without success. He was one of the few speedy and fit ‘seniors’. Also showing off considerable skills was Walter Alibey (now journalist).. Gary Awai also had some great moments but limped off at the non-existent ‘half-time’.. the game was played for a continuous seventy minutes. Oh how could I forget, Lenny Bass was courageous and at times even skillful in goal but had no chance against the hungry Aberdeen brothers…

Final score? Something like 3 or 4 for the young ones.. I believe I saw at least one response from the ‘seniors’ but I confess I couldn’t look too closely after a time….:-) ;-) :-) (thanks for the Black Label Johnny Walker whoever.. it helped dull the pain!!)…..

I await Keith’s far more balanced and complete account (there are several players with good performances who need to be commended) but it’s early Sunday morning and having taken to bed early (“sleep that knits up the ravelled sleeve of care”), I thought I’d share in this early morning insomnia my total enjoyment in spite of everything of yesterday’s proceedings….

There is so much possibility for this December post-Christmas reunion which I sincerely hope is maintained, expanded and provides an opportunity especially for the younger members to gather.

May I be so bold as to make the point to the older members of the list that it is VERY IMPORTANT to make contact with the recent graduates.. I was asked by one just finishing off at UWI – very early twenties “How does one become an ‘Old Boy’??”… meaning join the Association formally. The opportunity has to be carefully created where especially the younger members can meet INFORMALLY and at low/nil cost. I propose to the formal Old Boys (a few of whom are on one of these lists) that it is going to be well worth the relatively small outlay to ‘sponsor’ at least partly this reunion event. “Chefs Royal” and the annual dinner are not as universal in drawing power as a football/basketball/all fours etc etc LIME where the thing is to meet and greet fellow school mates… keep working at the formula people…

And total kudos to Willard and Willard and Willard and his committee (deliberate! doh dig Dion! and DJ Colin Chambers who made enough noise to please any of the young!!! and Ramesh who brought serious food!!)

And to Aaron Doyle, brave spokesman for the ‘young group’ who showed that like any true QRC boy, his skills extended beyond his specialist sport of basketball at which he represented the College well at the highest level,.. and he brought along SOME of the Sunday evening ‘sweaters’..lucky they didn’t bring more of that group.. Chike Taylor-Phillip now at “Cornerstone University” – (check the list mentioned earlier) was dissuaded by me from going for his boots… also seen was another basketballer Chike Pilgrim of “Word, Sound and Power”…but let me not rub it in, ‘seniors’…. “ten years and a few drinks” and distracted by their barefoot goal-keeper (the inimitable Eldon Yhip,[keeper of the Roger Prince outfit of ???(come in Roger!)]. why goal-keepers have so much character, ehn Lenny???).. I lost my bet backing experience vs youth.. who was it that said to me after, one of our former captains from the halcyon days of Mr. Douglas when I asked him why he hadn’t brought his boots “football is a young man’s game..”.. I feel though, that with some training together [Maybe Pastor Lemmy can organize something !!!] (the ‘Sunday afternoon’ ‘sweaters’ are accustomed playing with each other and as I said, they brought in ‘stars’ from ‘foreign’ hot out of successful American College seasons) the ‘seniors’ ‘can do better’!!! (typical teacher’s comment’)//

It was great people… next year for sure…

A very happy Principal…

PS I await all the comments, expansions on this…

PPS.. A ‘no-show’ by the Old Old Boys…..hmmmmm…..

It’s the last day before the Small Lime, and younger old boys have kindly asked that Red Cross Ambulance Services be on standby to take older heads to hospital after promised cutarses on the football field and basketball court. Elder Bluebloods have been responding to the challenge with expected candor. And the principal, who knows all from uniformed days, is attempting to sort the grand-chargers from the truly skillful. Apparently the latter generates a very short list, but that is to be seen.

The day is promising to be a grand affair, rivalling the camaraderie and span of the OBA Dinner and Outta De Blue (Saturday, January 13th, 2007 at QRC Grounds). Liming starts at 11:00 a.m., and we have a Blueblood who says that they are coming over from Tobago to catch the last after 7:00 p.m.

QRC old boys (And girls!), we liming until…

On Monday 18th in QRC’s gym and auditorium, a prize giving ceremony was held for participants of the recent INERTIA talent and dance competition. T-shirts were presented to all participants prior to the announcement of the top three.

QRC’s Randall Stanley won top billing with his performance of “Paradise Island”, a dramatic monologue a solo version of his dramatic monologue. In second place was Marbeda St. Hillaire, performing the song, “On My Knees”. Third place went to Christopher Hinkson who presented a mixed genre performance of drama, dance and song.

All Old Boys and supporters, particularly those driving people home afterwards, are reminded of the lime at the College Grounds on Saturday 30th December, 2006.

The QRC Small Lime is fast becoming one of the major events on an Old Boys’ calendar and is not to be missed. Walk with your favourite fluids and whatever you’re eating, and make sure you have some to share.

A minimum of fifty dollars is asked of all Old Boys attending, to be pooled and donated to the College.

The dinner was held on November 18th, 2006. As a result of the condition of the Main Block, festivities were conducted once again under tents in the courtyard behind the building. Given the award of contract for refurbishing the building, this should not be the case for too much longer. However, from photos taken by Old Boy Garry Agge and posted by Principal Bill Carter to his Picasa album site, it can be determined that a fine time was had by all.

The event featured many prominent Old Boys including His Excellency President George Maxwell Richards, Bishop Clyde Abdullah, Justice Rolston Nelson, former West Indies great Deryck Murray, HIV awareness activist Dr. Amery Browne, artist Jackie Hinkson, retired Permanent Secretary Hart Edwards, and former Vice Principal Patrick White. Also in attendance was former President and Prime Minister Arthur N.R. Robinson, and Mrs. Gail Boxill, honoured at the dinner for her 30 years of service to the College.

Principal Bill has selected and posted a few of the photos at http://picasaweb.google.com/william.reginabjc under caption “OBA Dinner 06 Album first selection.”

Details of the achievements and accolades accorded to the night’s new inductees to the Hall of Honour will be posted as information becomes available.

Recently, it was lamented in some circles that the QRC.edu domain name and the site content was lost. However, it has been said that once something has been in cyberspace, even if you think it’s been deleted, it is never really gone. With so many different spiders scurrying across the Internet efficiently indexing and caching content, you can be certain that anything that has ever been online is still out there somewhere. That can be a scary thought, especially for people with cocoa in the sun, but there are times that the ability of the ‘Net to archive itself can indeed be helpful.

That said, a site called the Internet Archive Wayback Machine has retained a copy of the QRC.edu site in all its glory, going back to its last edits circa 2002. The archived site includes articles on the history of QRC, the School Development Programme and a blurb on the installation of the (then!) new School Board on the front page, and can be found at http://web.archive.org/web/20041128093712/http://www.qrc.edu/. There is also a decidedly ancient email directory to be found at http://web.archive.org/web/20041209121026/www.qrc.edu/directory/.

Consequently, if anyone noticed that the QRC.edu link in the sidebar had come down, it is now back up, but points to the archived site instead.
